Chapter 9: The Wake

Hampshire, Friday afternoon

Sarah sneaked down the service stairs of the Roseberg Estate and made her way to the garage. Ruth had gone riding and had given the driver the afternoon off, leaving her mother seemingly stranded with no way to get out of the house. Sarah had not driven a car for years; the modern models intimidated her with their complex technology. She had no choice but to take an old vintage Mercedes if she wanted to go to the funeral.

The experience of driving again was better than she’d thought, and after a few miles of practice on an almost empty country road Sarah felt her confidence return. She never made it to the funeral though. She got hopelessly lost on the way and by the time she’d arrived at the cemetery everyone had already left.

The vicar told her about a wake at The Raven and asked her to take two forgotten children’s jackets with her if she was thinking of going there. She took them and went on her way until she suddenly lost her new-found courage again and stopped at a cake shop instead, where she indulged herself.

Her resolve to meet Charles crumbled as the afternoon went on. Now that she had taken the jackets, however, she had to go there and at least drop those off.

At The Raven, Sarah felt very uncomfortable. The place was full of drunks and rude people, and the foul language some of them were using intimidated her a little.

She overheard some mean conversations about Charles and soon realised that she was in the wrong place. She handed the jackets over to the barman and left the pub unnoticed.
